This Privacy Policy describes how Zelda Nihongo ("we", "us", or "our") handles your information when you use our Japanese language-learning app. We are committed to protecting your privacy. Please read this policy carefully.

📋Overview

Zelda Nihongo is a Japanese language-learning app that offers lessons, grammar quizzes, vocabulary practice, and an AI-powered chat tutor. Your privacy matters to us, so we have designed the app to store as much data as possible directly on your device rather than on remote servers.

      We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for advertising purposes.
    

🗂️Information We Collect

We collect only the minimum information needed to operate the app:

Account information — display name and optional avatar, stored locally on your device and on our server solely to sync your profile.
Learning progress — lesson completions, quiz scores, vocabulary mastery, and sakura points earned, stored on our server to enable progress sync across devices.
App preferences — your chosen interface language, display script setting (kanji / furigana / kana), and audio preferences, stored locally on your device.
Usage & analytics data — anonymised in-app events (screens visited, features used, session duration) collected via Google Analytics 4 to help us understand how learners interact with the app. This data does not identify you personally.
Device information — basic technical data (OS version, device type) collected automatically for crash reporting and compatibility purposes.

🔒How We Use Your Information

The information collected is used solely to:

Operate and improve the app's features (lessons, quizzes, AI tutor).
Sync your learning progress across devices when you log in.
Measure and analyse aggregate usage patterns to improve content quality and user experience.
Diagnose and fix technical errors and crashes.

📊Analytics Data

We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to collect anonymised usage data about how users interact with the app — such as which lessons are opened, how long sessions last, and which quiz types are most used. This helps us prioritise improvements and new content.

GA4 data is collected at the aggregate level and is not linked to your name, account, or any personally identifiable information. Google may process this data on servers located outside your country.

You can opt out of Google Analytics data collection at any time via the Privacy settings inside the app, or by using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on on web.

🤖AI Chat Processing Optional Feature

The AI chat tutor is an optional feature. It is only activated when you explicitly open the chat tutor and send a message. You can use all other parts of the app — lessons, quizzes, vocabulary practice — without ever engaging the AI tutor.

When you use the AI tutor, the message you type is transmitted over an encrypted connection to our server and then forwarded to OpenAI's API to generate a Japanese language tutoring response. The message is processed in real time and is not permanently stored on our servers after the response has been delivered.

OpenAI may temporarily retain API inputs for safety monitoring purposes in accordance with their data retention policy. Please review OpenAI's Privacy Policy for full details.

Your choice: If you prefer not to use the AI tutor, simply avoid opening the chat feature. No AI data is ever sent without your direct interaction.

💾Data Storage & Retention

Most user data (preferences, display settings) is stored locally on your device using secure on-device storage and is never transmitted to our servers.

Learning progress synced to our server is retained for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your server-side data at any time by contacting us (see below). Locally stored data can be removed by uninstalling the app.

Anonymised GA4 analytics data is retained by Google per their standard retention settings (up to 14 months by default) before automatic deletion.

The app uses the following third-party services, each governed by their own privacy policy:

Google Analytics 4 — anonymised usage analytics. See Google's Privacy Policy.
OpenAI — powers the optional AI chat tutor. Only activated when you use the chat feature. See OpenAI's Privacy Policy.

🍪Tracking & App Tracking Transparency

Zelda Nihongo does not track you across other companies' apps or websites. The app requests Apple's App Tracking Transparency permission only where required by iOS; you may deny this permission without any loss of functionality.

🔄Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of the app after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
